CCDI 2010 – 2011 Advocacy Goals

Mission - The Coalition shall be a grassroots organization of individuals, groups, and organizations that will act together to be a catalyst to promote and advocate for the full and equal participation in society of all people with disabilities.

Employment – CCDI will develop and implement an on-going advocacy awareness campaign to focus attention on employment issues for people with disabilities that shapes public opinion to encourage a thought process that embraces a vision of full integration and leads to the movement of people with disabilities who have been marginalized to the mainstream in the workforce.

• Advocate for increased funding for employment programs that lead to job creation and supported employment, the end of the legalization of sub-minimum wage paid to people with disabilities in sheltered workshops and provide recommendations to Illinois leaders who share our vision of accelerating employment and economic opportunities for people with disabilities.
• Advocate with state and local governmental offices for on the job training, placement programs and increased job coaching support for individuals with disabilities.
• Encourage a thought process among employers that enables a vision that hiring people with disabilities makes good business sense.
• Empower people with disabilities to become greater participants in the workforce by recognizing that they not only think outside the box but “live” outside of the box and therefore bring unique competitively relevant knowledge and perspectives about work processes, work requirements and goals as well as promoting work incentive planning initiatives to people with disabilities.

Accessibility – CCDI will develop and implement an on-going accessibility advocacy campaign to focus on issues that impact the quality of life for people with disabilities.

• Advocate for legislation that advances accessibility outcomes that lead to greater communication, physical access and programmatic access.
• Increase the awareness of and/or compliance with federal, state and local accessibility laws and provide recommendations to Illinois leaders regarding accessibility initiatives.
• Advocate for affordable and accessible transportation options for people with disabilities.
• Advocate for affordable and accessible housing options for people with disabilities.
• Advocate for affordable and accessible healthcare options for people with disabilities.

CCDI will also support all legislation and/or proposals at the local, State and Federal level that hold true to the Mission & Vision of CCDI and will collaborate with other organizations in areas that include but are not limited to: civil rights, Olmstead implementation, transitioning, energy assistance, and voter registration/participation.
